Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the presence of enlarged glands and tissue in the male breast. Common in the elderly and adolescent, gynecomastia is usually the result of imbalanced hormones. However, gynecomastia can occur in men of any age and can also be a result of obesity or steroids. Typically, particularly if a patient is young, gynecomastia corrects itself through hormone balance or weight loss. Many men struggling with gynecomastia experience psychological effects and should talk to a doctor about the option of surgery.

Candidates for Male Breast Reduction

Enlarged breast tissue in men does not pose any serious health risks. The best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are those of a healthy weight whose breast size has stabilized. Those who are overweight experiencing gynecomastia should attempt to eat well and exercise before considering surgery.

The Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery involves liposuction or non-surgical ultrasound massage or a combination of the two. These procedures remove fatty tissue in the breast and can help contour the chest, giving it a more masculine look.

The Recovery

Most patients require about 10 days of downtime, refraining from strenuous activity. After 10 days, patients may resume low-impact exercise and gradually return to normal activities. Final results will be visible in 4-6 months.
