A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, removes excess skin and tightens the tissue surrounding the breast, giving the breasts better contour and raising their position on the chest. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola. A breast lift corrects laxity caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain, age, and heredity.
Candidates for a Breast Lift
The best candidates for a breast lift are those with sagging breasts that are not too large in size. Though a breast lift can be performed on breasts of any size, those with large breasts may benefit more from a breast reduction procedure. If you’re planning on having more children, are nursing, or lose more than 20 pounds, your breast lift results may be damaged.
The incision site will depend on your breast and areola size and shape, the degree of sagging, and the skin elasticity. Typically, incisions are around the areola in a circular pattern, around the areola and vertically from the areola to the breast crease, or around the areola, vertically from the breast crease and horizontally along the crease. After the incision, the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast shape and firmness. The nipple may also be repositioned.
Most patients rest and minimize activity for 10 days. After six weeks, patients can return to most normal activities and can begin heavy lifting after one month.
