Most women who have undergone a mastectomy are candidates for micro-surgical breast reconstruction. Patients should be in generally good health, be non-smokers, and should not have had multiple abdominal surgeries or scars. The best candidates are women who want their breast reconstruction to mimic a natural breast. This type of procedure does have a longer recovery than typical breast reconstruction surgeries.
During a micro-surgical breast reconstruction, your surgeon will remove excess skin, fat, and tissue from your donor site – either your abdomen, thigh, or gluteus. The tissue will then be transferred to the chest wall to create a breast, using a microscope to connect blood vessels, which will provide blood supply to the reconstructed breast.
